About Garth Sundem

Do you need a Monday morning shot of geekery?

If so, you've come to the right place. Every Monday, early, I'll drop splendid geekery from the fields of physics, math, computer science, zoology

... Full Bio

D'you dig the Geek Off? Did you email your answers to geekoff@gmail.com? If not, too late sucka! That is, too late until Monday morning, when we play another round of the feud. Yep, every week there's a Geek Off and every week you can win a free Geeks' Guide to World Domination: Be Afraid, Beautiful People. Check the quiz Monday, email your answers 'til Friday at midnight EST, then check the answers and fight about corrections starting Saturday
morning.

And congrats to Gerhard and Christiana, who submitted perfect answers. And a shout out too, to all the cheeky slackers who used a toothpick to create the "not equal to" (≠) sign in problem number three. Again the two-sided randomizer: G is heads, C is tails...here's the toss. Tails it is and Christiana wins this week's book. Gerhard: I have a feeling your time will come, and soon. Let's get some more perfect entries next week and force me to break out my old D&D dice (just gimme an excuse to break out the d10...).

Here are the answers to last week's geek off:

1. Geek Culture/Ephemera
Monty Python's Flying Circus: The Lumberjack Song, Ministry of Silly Walks
Saturday Night Live: The Ambiguously Gay Duo, Bass-O-Matic
Red Dwarf: Kryten 2X4B-523P, The Cat
Star Trek: The Trouble with Tribbles, Nyota Ohura

2. Math/Science
In the second picture, imagine adding three cubes to each side. Now the only difference between the first and second pictures is that in the second, four cubes replace four marbles—this a marble equals a cube, and it will take NINE marbles to balance the top.

3. Classic Puzzle
This is tricky, with the trick being to lay the third match in III across the second match to make I +. The whole equation now reads: I+I+I+I=IIII

4. Tech
Lean on Me: 2
Horn of the General Lee: 1
99 Bottles of Beer: 4
Theme Song from The Monkeys: 5
You Are My Sunshine: 3

Not trying to be picky (wait, yes I am!), but if you did what you suggested for the toothpick problem, wouldn't it look like this:
I + I I + I + = I I I I

To get the answer you are looking for, wouldn't you have to take the second match in II and lay it across the second match in III to get
I + I + I + I = I I I I
?
