About Becky Jungbauer

A scientist and journalist by training, I enjoy all things science, especially science-related humor. My column title is a throwback to Jane Austen's famous first line in Pride and Prejudice

If you lived in 1844 and were a follower of American Baptist preacher William Miller, today would forever be marked as "The Great Disappointment." The world was expected to come to an end on this date. Guess they hadn't heard of the Mayan calendar. Most Millerites gave up on him after TGD, but descendants are still around - you know them as Seventh Day Adventists.

In celebration of today's historic disappointment, the likes of which required capitalization, I give you Toothpaste For Dinner.

Love the postdoc in dirt hoeing. I must admit I often feel my lengthy and expensive education was for naught when I'm sweeping up Lucky Charms from underneath the kitchen table for the 6th time in a week....

My brand of toothpaste is recommended for use after meals, not with an empty stomach, but with a poison warning against swallowing.

Was that same advice intended for the SDA and the prophesy of end times?

I don't know why you took on the SDA and why they haven't grilled you about it yet. Maybe the anniversary is a holiday. If so, they will be after you in the next day or two.

It is usually recommended to avoid getting into arguments with them. SDA never gives up, and therefore never loses an argument. So you've taken on the impossible, particle in a box problem.

SDA knocks on my door about once a year, usually an older woman, maybe the same one each time, with a big handbag full of books that I haven't read. The conversation is short.

After she makes a brief statement about something she wants to talk about, I ask which group she is with, and why she is at my door.

Her answer is that she SDA and is not looking for converts, but is offering advice to anyone who will listen.

Offering advice? Maybe

Not looking for converts? Goodbye and thanks for dropping by,.

So I'm really surprised that you took on the SDA.

Science is looking for converts, but never comes to my door with free books, friendly advice, and unlimited energy, time, and enthusiasm.

The scientific community has some powerful arguments with standards and ethics that sometimes look like a better system.

At other times when there is difficulty and danger, the scientific community slips away looking for a place to hide.

On those occasions an odd assortment of people who never give up, remain to finish a task and deliver on a commitment.

Those people are not naming a day or year, but in various ways are prepared for a time when there will be no place to hide.

You took on the SDA?

With toothpaste?
