The big five extinctions  are  regularly the subject of   many investigations, and speculations regarding the causes, the main  culprits  being  often put  down to  asteroid, or other  extra terrestial impacts.  Ongoing investigations  by  paleontologists,  together  with satellite surveillance,  continues to reveal, more and massive impacts ,   some   leaving  evidence  of 1000   mile diameter  crater rims.   And this  precludes  hidden underwater evidence  from the Pacific Ocean.

Here`s a  brand new take on the subject.  Did  Earths Gravity  change,    perhaps  more than once,   via asteroids  , or   some other body  impacting,   and  concluding with  the  Earth,  ingesting  a  massive ultra dense,  Nickel  Iron   Planetary core  or cores. Such an object may have been orbiting the Solar System for thousands or even millions of years.

Following  a gravitational increase, which would in all probabilities,  be accompanied by  a reversal of  Earths  Magnetic Polarity,  long and far reaching  Gravitational  effects would ensue.  The pre-  nickel iron core ingestion  era,  of reduced gravity,  say of  I8 - 22 ft sec/sec  provides  answers to many puzzling   questions.  eg.  the  massive  sizes of prehistoric animals,  particularly those with outrageously extended necks,  that suggest a lower G factor.   A ,   G  factor,  increase,  explains the grounding of many birds that   previously flew,  albeit with smaller wings, and larger winged / high lift to body ratio hugh flying birds which suddenly could no longer accomplish long journeys, and were suddenly confined to modest sorties. together with the loss of  flying reptiles. Also, there is ;

The  sinking and entire loss of the Oceanic surface plankton types,  resulting in species loss of plankton feeders.    eg the Plankton Formentera, an species of fish that   sank to a lower oceanic level, effecting the entire predatory chain,   ie. a chain of life support obase upon,  who eats who, and where ?

One effect of  the G  plus.  effect  is that  the  everything was virtually twice as heavy.  Even the air.  The entire Earths water table was lowered temporarily,  water holes   would   swiftly  disappear for years,  until  Super  G  caused Earths Glaciers to accelerate their ice flows, raising sea levels.  Gravity is everywhere,  you can`t see it,   smell it or taste it, there is only one escape.    For the amphibious   that escape, is  displacement in water.   The shore dwellers survive,   as do the Caymens, Alligators and Crocodiles.
How can we prove or disprove,   a Gravitational Increase:

A NEW SCIENCE :   DINAFAECEOLOGY  /  COPROLITE RESEARCH
Until now the  subject of  coprolite  (dinosaur faeces)   has been confined to  ascertaining the diet of dinosaurs. But now we have  three  entirely new questions. ( For Paleontologists , Mathmeticians,
 and Dynamicists. )

1)  How long did specific faeces  take to fall ?

2) What was thwere velocity on impact with the ground.

3)  And at what rate did those faeces progressively deform, before they ceased motion.

Why ?  This is why .  This will tell us  an unexpected and surprising thing.  The afore mentioned questions, will when applied accurately to a sufficiently wide spectra of fossilised  faeces. eg or what was the Youngs Modulus ?

Tell us the magnitude of Earths Gravitational Field  immediatly  prior  the extinction of the Dinosaurs

That is  to say,  fossilied intact, impact deformed dinosaur faeces, and there pre impact deformation state,  are possessed of unique and important information,  concerning accelleration.   .(ie. G )

What a novel idea! Great article, Kevin.

Wow. Just...wow...

Doesn't the fact that the earth had oceans of liquid water before the K-T event excludes the possibility that it's surface gravity could ever have been much lower than today? Plus, the fact that evidence of magnetic field reversals are preserved in very ancient mineral layers shows that the earth always had a magnetic field and a Nickel-Iron core.

I love speculation!

No, I'm not 'knocking' what you write - I genuinely enjoy it.  Without the 'what if' there is no science, there is no philosophy.

What if  the Earth's diameter shrank (shrunk/shrinked)?
IF  the pull of gravity at the surface increased by only a small percentage thereby, it might have led to some drift of evolution back towards a more watery environment, especially in the case of larger creatures.  Flying would require more energy also.

Patrick,
Thanks for the interest,   a recent  question,  posed by paleontologists  is,   Why dont we have 100 Ton Elephants.    A clue is that Elephants are not swimmers, and we do have  100 ton Whales.   The difference is displacement.   My supposition is that displacement  is the Key to the Survival  of the water dwelling reptiles, eg.  Caymens , Crocodiles   and Alligators.  Its not much of a life for the Coelecanth, basking in the Sunshine is much more prefereable.  Kevin Wilson

There's a fundamental problem with this idea, in that it assumes all things being equal, the only thing changing is the force of gravity.  However, this wouldn't be the case.

With a lower gravity, the escape velocity would be lower, so more of the lighter elements would have escaped into space resulting in a less dense atmosphere.  This lowered density would have made flight more difficult, so if gravity got stronger, the density would have increased resulting in MORE buoyancy for existing birds and not less (their weight non-withstanding).  This is precisely why it is easier to float in salt water rather than fresh water.

In addition, with a less dense atmosphere, more water would have been removed at lower temperatures, so once again, an increase in gravity should result in MORE water being available since more energy would now be required to turn it into vapor and it would condense out of the atmosphere.

Another factor would have been the temperatures that could be sustained since lower temperatures would've been the norm at the earth's surface which makes it significantly harder for "cold-blooded" animals to function.

I'm not quite sure what such a variation would've done regarding the Earth's moon, but it seems unlikely that such an increase wouldn't have resulted in the moon being forcefully drawn to the earth where the tidal forces would have likely caused it to break up and form rings (maybe?!?).  The point being, that with the lower gravity initially being proposed, the moon would have been at a certain orbital position, which would suddenly be well beyond equilibrium if the earth's gravity suddenly increased.  In other words, it would now find itself within the boundary for acceleration to the surface.  This would be no different than imagining the effect on a satellite in orbit, should we suddenly increase the gravitational pull on it by 30%.

Kevin: Earlier today I tried the experiment of basking in the sunshine.  It was most refreshing!

Gerhard: I was postulating a minor reduction in radius, not even 1% with no change of total planetary mass.  I take your point about many things being affected, though.  I don't think buoyancy would have any significant effect on bird flight.  Small insects, maybe.  An increase of density would affect drag.  An increase in weight would require more energy for  take-off.  I must confess, though, that I haven't read much on other-world models, being more 'into' theories of communication with other-intelligence.

One thing I like about speculation is the way it highlights the major flaw in gedankenexperiments - it is all too easy to assume that no relevant factors have been overlooked.  I also like the fact that speculation can, if taken in small doses, sharpen the mind.

Gerhard Adam's picture

The reason why I said things would be radically affected, is because the original article suggested a gravitational acceleration of 18-22 ft/sec2.   This represents about 30% + variation.

This is why my immediate consideration would be for 1) holding an atmosphere, 2) affect of the moon's orbit and it's influence on the earth, and 3) the affect of the earth's orbit around the sun.

Each of these elements have the ability be calculated concerning what such a change would imply (especially given that we are supposed to start with "less" gravity).  Therefore, it would seem that using that as a starting point, we should be able to postulate what would happen at the planetary level before we concern ourselves with the biological level.

BTW ... I love speculation and it's often from that activity that new insights emerge, or previously assumed "solutions" are suddenly thrown into question, so you'll get no quarrel from me on that.
