UPDATE: Newest posting contains directions for AB negative blood donors outside the St. Louis area.
UPDATE: Donors are still needed to help this young boy.

I just received word that several potential donors have been found for a 14 month old leukemia victim, who was desperately in need of an AB negative blood donation.
A friend of mine has a 14 month old son who is in dire need of type AB
negative blood.  He had a bone marrow transplant due to leukemia and
has been in St. Louis Children's Hospital ever since, and has declined
in health to the point that this request is literally a matter of life
and death for this little boy.  ALL AREA HOSPITALS IN ST LOUIS have
been checked and are out of supply of this rare blood type.

Even though the frequency of AB negative in the US population is only 0.6%, the willingness of people (big shout out to Patrick Lockerby, who went above and beyond) to spread the word has made a difference in one young boy's life.  They have identified enough donors that new donors are having to be turned away.

Although this child's needs are met, there is always a need for more blood donors, especially those with rare blood types.

I'm so glad. I emailed a bunch of people to see if they could help but most of us are rare blood types too. Glad you posted the update - I was wondering if you had found help.

I received this email a few days ago and forwarded it on to my co-workers. One of them is now a donor for this little guy!
