About Tommaso

I am an experimental particle physicist working with the CMS experiment at CERN and the CDF experiment at Fermilab. In my spare time I play chess...

The Physics in Collisions conference in Kobe is over, and I am packing up. Tomorrow morning I will leave from KIX to FRA, and later FRA to VCE, hopefully making it home for dinner.

I learned a few interesting things on physics at the conference, and I hope I will share some of the highlights with you in a post tomorrow. But I also learned quite a few things about Japanese culture, which probably was a more valuable experience for me.

For now, I will just offer you the picture below, which portrays a rather overaged student in front of his two posters. Regulars of this site will not fail to notice that despite the suit (jacket not shown), I am wearing a Scientific Blogging shirt (blue logo near the pocket).

I also take this occasion to thank the organizer of the conference, prof. Yuji Yamazaki, for the impeccable organization. Here he is, at his command post in the entrance of the Centennial hall:

Overaged! No way, you look great, especially with the shirt.

Ok, thanks - maybe overweight is a better description: I am at my maximum weight in the last four years, need to lose 5-6 pounds :)
Cheers,
T.

Hank
We should send him one of those swanky black shirts also.  Then he'd look twice as great!

dorigo
You know my address, Hank :)

Are the posters available anywhere as PDF or jpg files? They look impressive. Did you do them yourself, or were they assembled by a graphics designer?

dorigo
Hi Nige,

nope, just plain powerpoint and some imagination. One of them is already downloadable in ppt format (in the post I wrote one week ago). The second should be made available today in another article.

cheers,
T.

An overaged student is spelled with "an", not "a", because "o" is a vowel. Otherwise I must defend you against Michael's criticism of this adjective - it is a very appropriate one!

dorigo
Thanks, corrected. Mentioning the typo would have sufficed, the rule is the same as in Italian.
Cheers,
T.

Tommaso, you look just great! I don't know why are you so shy in this picture! Man, both you and your work (posters) are very very good.

dorigo
Thank you Hatim.

I hope mine will have the long awaited for signal! The Higgs signal.
I am afraid I have to be careful and say "if it exists!"

Yeah, looking good there, Tommaso! But I suspect that you barely remember actually being a student ...

dorigo
Heh, Kea. It's a long time ago in fact.
T.

Kea,
yeah you are right, I can see tons of experience in his posture.

T. Dorigo, I like the confidence and swagger of your picture. I expected an older looking man.

dorigo
Thanks Jeff, well, maybe I do not look so old because I still feel rather young.
Cheers,
T.

Hi Tommaso,

you look a bit dour. Jetlag?
Try saying Higgs next time someone takes your picture.

Cheers,
Martin

dorigo
Hi martin,
yes, I slept an average of three hours in the last week...
Cheers,
T.

You look good, not overaged just experienced.

dorigo
Thank you Hontas, I appreciate the compliment :)

If it were me, I would have brought a cushion-mat/sleeping-bag to lie down on..& laid there (in front of the poster). I would talk to any people, in a laying-down position.

I mean, do people really come up & read posters & query you? Travelling that distance (plus the time involved), just to stand in front of a poster? As a matter of fact, couldn't the whole conference been "mailed in"? Just send in the .pdf, powerpoint slides, video of a talk & everyone can get the technical content. I realize personal contact @conferences is a major part (schmoozing, mingling, doing business, making deals, etc). Tell us about the latter aspect.

Hi Tommaso,

3 hours of sleep a week, eh? I know that the amount of sleep required lessens when you age - I mean mature.
Still, as a likewise overaged person, I would not be able to supply a remotely coherent answer to any question concerning Higgs Bosons or similar after sleeping for only 3 hours - unless it were my siesta.
How did you do it? Drink a dozen espressos (espressi?) ?
You must be looking forward to a nice long lie-in this weekend.

Cheers,
Martin

dorigo
Must have been the food. It usually does affect my intellect, but this time I did not seem to pay for it.
This weekend unfortunately is not going to be exactly of total rest either...
Cheers,
T.
