loads of bacteria construct a protective outer "shell" (referred to as the outer membrane) that is fairly adept at boxing out insults like antibiotics or detergents or foreign agents. it's the microbial equivalent of building a house AROUND YOUR HOUSE.

my lab group is trying to figure out how the shell (or, if you prefer, outer house) is built.
