About Bente Lilja Bye

Earth science expert and astrophysicist writes about Earth observation, geodesy, climate change, geohazards, water cycle and other science related topics.

I've worked as Research Director... Full Bio

There is a lot of fuzz and even down right drama related to the forthcoming Large Hadron Collider experiment at CERN. I have started to call it the Lovely Hadron Collider because I think the science is great and I am a bad teaser...;-)

The Blue Marble by NASA/Reto Stöckli

Geodesy is the science of determining the geometry, gravitational field, and the rotation of the Earth and their evolution in time.

I just want to confirm that the shape of the planet Earth will stay the same even after the Lovely Hadron Collider is fueled up and running. I don't suspect reading the latest scientific paper on the issue will help or change the view of those too much in love with Doomsday scenarios, but if you are curious please continue reading.

The LHC turn-on fear are completely unfounded and you can read all of the technical details in this Review of the safety of LHC collisions if you so wish.

To sum it up: The geometry, gravitational field and rotation of our planet will remain the same! :-)

"The shape of planet Earth will remain the same even after the LHC starts"

"starts" is the deceptive word here....

Starting (which has now happened) is NOT the same as saying... even after the LHC collides Protons... which has Not Happened Yet (today 11th Sept 2008)... and who knows When it may happen????

Collision/smashing is the key to the conCERN.

Are there no Intelligent beings left here???
Are you all brain dead??

I totally agree with you: T H I N K - Then Write

Well then, see you in the afterlife... ;-)

In the 1930s, and then in the 1970s (well, a few more times too) a religious group that is well known predicted the end of the world.

When it never happened, and it clearly did not, they then changed it to simply being 'in motion.'

If all the fringe groups now saying the LHC didn't really start (so that their prediction of doom does not count) and only stupid people like us thought it was starting (the evil media needed something to talk about, it turns out, unless they were talking about the people saying the world was doomed, in which case they were doing their job), why were they all writing articles saying the LHC could not, you know, start yesterday, lest we all be doomed? Lawsuits, wild 'theories', etc.

Now it will be a February destruction, doomsayers sayeth. Then it will be 2012.

Basically, the LHC detractors are starting to sound like the people searching for Bigfoot or Hitler living among aliens in Antarctica.

No matter how silly and wildly off track the ideas about LHC are, the noise these Doomsday lovers create is great for particle physics and astronomy. :-)

I love modal logic. My statement about "after LHC starts" is vague enough to include the meaning "when the collisions starts". I have said nothing wrong, mind you. :-) As a matter of fact it was all included in the first place. I insist that the planet Earth will remain unaltered even with all the collisions LHC could possible create both in theory and practice.

Thus spoke Stellare :-)
