SundogPicture: Sundog on the right, the Sun on the left.

Picture was taken in Finland, Lahti  3.1.2008. Sundogs exist, when there is ice in atmosphere which reflects the Sun light. The phenomenon is not that rare, but usually you do not have camera with you. This one was taken with mobile phone.

Is it like a rainbow?    I know if I want to try and see a rainbow after some rain, I need to have the sun directly at my back so the axis of sunlight is between my eye and the shadow of my head and if a rainbow will be seen it will be 42 degrees off the axis.

How do I see a sundog?

Perhaps if you were a more GLASS HALF FULL kind of person you would realize I actually know how to optimize your chances of seeing one!

My wife is from South Finland and she had never heard about sundogs. So in one day...

Wife: Something really weird happen to day.
Pasi: ??? (what now)
Wife: I step out from the car and I saw the Sun. Then I turned my head and I saw another Sun. THERE WAS TWO SUNS AT THE SKY.
Pasi: Of course there was.
Wife: Really. There was - you must believe me.


Now lets just hope, that she never reads this.

Thanks for posting your Sun Dog picture! I have not ever seen a Sun Dog as large as the one in your picture. I found it while searching for info about Sun Dogs. For most of my life, I look for both Sun & Moon Dogs. Yet, about 2 weeks ago, I saw what I believe was a "full sun dog", as I call it.
I was in an airplane, when I saw beneath me, a full, complete, round "rainbow ball"!!!
This was an amazing site! just beautiful!
Was this a Sun dog, too? From the ground, looking up, Sun/Moon Dogs never appear to be perfectly round. Never have I heard of any such thing. This "full Sun Dog" was very beautiful & vivid in color & fully round! It was a big rainbow ball of color! I tried to take a picture with my tiny, cheapo digital camera, yet it did not work. By the time that I got my cam ready, we had long passed the Full Sun Dog.
Also, I have seen many double Sun Dogs and several double Moon Dogs. These appear to be the same distance apart from the Sun/Moon and at an equal level to one another.
While I am not a scientist, know that I am very thankful for all who are.
