I know I talk too much about web 2.0 and medicine anyway, but I promise I’ll never say a word about web 4.0. Now, I just would like to present a new site which will cover what web 3.0 or the so-called semantic web is about. According to Wikipedia:
Humans are capable of using the Web to carry out tasks such as finding the Finnish word for “car”, to reserve a library book, or to search for the cheapest DVD and buy it. However, a computer cannot accomplish the same tasks without human direction because web pages are designed to be read by people, not machines. The semantic web is a vision of information that is understandable by computers, so that they can perform more of the tedium involved in finding, sharing and combining information on the web.
So please welcome WikiProteins, a new site on which only a demo can be accessed these days, but certainly has a great future.
What is in the Knowlet space in WikiProteins?

- IntAct: a freely available, open source database system and analysis tools for protein interaction data.
- National Library of Medicine
- UniProt: the Universal Protein Resource
- GO Consortium: the set of model organism and protein databases and biological research communities actively involved in the development and application of the Gene Ontology.
So WikiProteins will be a universal protein database with clearly trackable content. Don’t miss the demo on their site.
By the way, they’ll keep me informed and I’ll let you know when something begins to work there.
