The Higgs field isn't the only thing the LHC might unearth.  A while back Sean Carroll posted a great discussion of other possibilities including supersymmetry, dark matter and something not yet predicted.

He threw out that there was a 95% chance of finding this Higgs thing, which was sort of silly for an educated man.   Since whatever Higgs will be is assumed to be the last standard model particle, it's an easy thing to say for pop culture consumption but not all that great in science.    If it was designed to generate pageviews for Discover it probably worked.   I assume he isn't all caught up in the excitement now and wouldn't say that today.
