I do believe that a vast majority of men and women are evil and that furthermore we really ought to deal with this fact rather than being politically correct and ‘believing’ that all Men are inherently good.

On what do I base my saying that Man is evil?

Well, for a start, why not take a look at Man’s history? In the course of the 5,000 years of our known history, we find that human beings have repeatedly and with the most natural ease reverted to evil in their daily lives.

For a start, we can look with horror at the number of wars, battles, skirmishes and other military activities that Man has engaged in. We can read how Man has repeatedly encircled towns and starved them to submission. We can read how Man has invaded other lands and other races and then proceeded to slaughter innocent civilians, raping the women and stealing from the wealth of the occupied lands.

All these wonderful activities by Man are more than common throughout his noble history.

Next we can see how Man has always sought to exploit his supposedly ‘fellow’ Man through trade, commerce and any form of business transaction for that matter. All this in the name of trade, which translates into the word ‘profit’.

Indeed, the lust for profit has hurled Man upon Man like dog against dog, fiercely seeking the complete destruction of rivals and competitors in order to gain more and more money.

Man has used the law in order to subjugate Man in every conceivable manner. The law is created in order to protect the elite from the poor so that the latter will absolutely no legal path whereby they can reclaim their stolen rights. The law makes sure of that! Secondly the law is created so that powerful nations can legally subjugate weaker nations, allowing them to murder at casual will and do basically whatever they wish. That is what the League of Nations, the Nuremberg Trials, the United Nations, the US-UK starvation-policy against Iraq (1990-2003) are all about.

Now I do know your objection: yes, you say, but hasn’t Man also created the works that are sublime, geniuses such as Mozart, Michelangelo, Einstein?

Of course they have. No one is going to steal the dignity of the few human beings who have been inspirational throughout their lives.

But these souls are a mere handful in a gigantic ocean of the most wretched evil.

Let me now turn from to the individual, hurtful speck that is Man himself.

Look at men and women closely, observe them for yourselves. Think of about ten men and women that you know personally and think about their endearing attributes.

Why to your shock and horror you will find that most of them are thoroughly reprehensible characters!

And then there are these others humans who would commit the most heinous crimes if only they believed they could get away with it. These creatures fear the law, the courts, prisons and their reputations and were it not for these facets of our so-called ‘civilization’, why they would go on a rampage this evening.

I ask you, look at these human beings.

Every day, every minute and every moment you will see them thinking ill thoughts for others, thinking out devilish ideas and plans in order to give themselves more prestige, money, power or fame.

See the human as he fanatically seeks to character assassinate you; as he feverishly seeks to defame you, insult you and your children. See the vile human as he literally shines with joy upon hearing bad news for you. See the human as he endlessly schemes how, why and where and when to steal from you; to get you expelled or demoted from your job. See the vile human as he seeks to hurt your emotions and your senses with uncommonly grievous words, phrases and ideas. See the human as he goes around from person to person, complaining about you unto others, creating fantastic stories on how you did this evil act or that evil act, while you have of course done nothing at all.

See the vile human as he writes books, articles, journals against you. See the vile repulsive human as he desperately seeks to ‘legally’ imprison you though you have not committed one offence! See him seeking to get you deported from the country you happen to be living in. See him trying to get you beaten to a pulp by paid criminals while you stand there helpless in front of the august body of completely useless and ineffective laws. See the vile human who brags about his glorious life while you suffer from eternal humiliations, vicious exploitation and a so-called ‘life’ not even worthy of the lowliest pig.

And then, I ask you, do you really think Man is wonderful after all?

Think of how many are today scheming against you in a million and one ways? Think about all your so-called family and friends and think how many of them, deep down, really despise you despite their brilliant protestations to the contrary?

That is why, reader, you must think and think really hard, when I talk about Man, for we need to tear down those sickening masks that humans wear and we need to look at the real face of Man, and I tell you that that face of Man is a most horrible image before me.

It is an image that is at once ugly, snickering, boastful, arrogant, rude, dismissive, scheming and full of evil lust.

Man is the most depraved animal in history.

Think of what he does: he rapes and he gang rapes. He commits incest and has children from his own daughters. He loves to torture in a thousand ways, and he loves to be tortured – yes masochism. He loves to force every conceivable sexual act upon six or five year old children. He loves to murder children. He loves and relishes to lie and deceive everyone else as that gives him power and power is an aphrodisiac.

Look at that human who interrupts you every time you try to get in a word or two. Look at the human who seemingly listen to what you are passionately saying and then casually changes the subject, thereby negating all that you have just poured out from your heart. Look at the rude human. How abundant they are! Everywhere you go and every day you will see them and you will sadly have to experience them.

Cold, dismissive, curt arrogant vipers! And you think you can get through to them?

Reader, if you believe that, then you are a dreamer.

For those who go on and on and on about people like Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin, Bokassa, Pol Pot, Charles Manson are simply talking about those humans who lived out their lives in a dramatic fashion and were more extreme.

But why don’t they look at themselves for once in their lives?

Man, the supremely depraved animal, is all around us: and all around you.

To postulate that humans are intrinsically evil is simple nonsense.  They behave like any grouping of animals, and while some will take advantage, it isn't that they are fundamentally evil that promotes such actions, but rather how society has allowed them to remain anonymous.

While humans are clearly not arbitrarily good, neither are they arbitrarily evil.

Steve Davis

Most of the criticisms in the article are factual, but that does not mean they are typical. Even the nastiest of characters has a positive side and must engage on a daily basis in activities that are beneficial to others. If it were otherwise, such an individual could not survive.

Gerhard Adam
I would also add that much of the diatribe against humans isn't evil, but self-serving.
Look at that human who interrupts you every time you try to get in a
word or two. Look at the human who seemingly listen to what you are
passionately saying and then casually changes the subject, thereby
negating all that you have just poured out from your heart. Look at the
rude human. How abundant they are!

What is evil about this?  Is it perhaps that the individual talking sees themselves as better than others, so thinks nothing of imposing his thoughts and time on others?  Perhaps the speaker should be grateful that he isn't ignored more blatantly.

More importantly, it seems that such a diatribe is a double-edged sword, since you cannot reasonably exclude yourself from the accusations you so deftly level at others.  If you truly believe that this is the way humans and society operates, then perhaps you need to re-examine your own biases and consider where the venom and hatred originates.

ayad
First of all I said that a vast majority of humans are evil, I did not say all humans are evil, and therefore I can exclude myself.

ayad
To Gerhard: I did not say 'humans are intrinsically evil', so the rest of your words are rubbish.

To Steve: more constructive criticism. However, when he says that even the nastiest evil people do have a positive side, that is true. If you look at Ted Bundy, you will see a highly intelligent, charming man on the one hand - no one is saying that evil human beings have horns on their heads! But being evil simply far outweighs whatever good he/she have.

Basically if we were to look at this subject statistically, I contend that those who are evil by far outnumber those who are decent. Furthermore, as I wrote in my article, there are those people who fear the law, the courts and jail and so they repress their more violent evil side, but nontheless continue to exhibit their nasty side to their family, friends, colleagues and other unfortunate ones.

Gerhard Adam
Cold, dismissive, curt arrogant vipers! And you think you can get through to them?

How appropriate.

Steve Davis
"I contend that those who are evil by far outnumber those who are decent."
I don't think that is supported by history. If that was the case then communities would not develop, or if they did develop, would not last.

ayad
Who said 'communities are developing'?! Who said history is progressing towards the better? Who said the good outweighs the evil in history, and in our world today and within our lives? Who said that wars, murder, rape, pillage are decreasing? Who said that the drugs trade, pornography, trafficking in adults and children are decreasing? Who said the number and power of organised crime is decreasing?

Good morning Ayad, and welcome to scientificblogging.

I, like you, am not a scientist. I am able to write (somewhat) scientifically through my knowledge of language and philosophy. I think that, despite my lack of qualification, I am able to contribute something of worth to the discussions that take place here, particularly when doing philosophy of ethics or of the Self.I believe that the depth of my arguments, the methodology used to create them and the complete fashion in which they are presented would likely lead to, at the least, a lively discussion with either of the fine gentlemen who have, thus far, presented your ideas with valid comments. In fact, this has happened on more than one occasion.

I therefore can state as fact the possibility of highly stimulating, productive discussion of nearly any proposed theory on this fantastic website.

I, apparently like you, came to this site with a backlog of ideas for which I can state, I sought review. I must admit that when you showed up I was intrigued, quite candidly, by both who you were and what you said.
So it is with some reservation that I must reveal the following to you:
1.) Passion alone gets you nowhere, here.
2.) The dismissal of argument, it is expected, must contain a valid counter-argument.
3.) Everything belongs to some set  or other. Any thing included in that set can not also be excluded from that set.
4.) Without proper definition of terms to express ideas, said expressions become moot.

Argument is relevant here. It is often the point. One thing that became very clear to me in having only been here a short time is that Scientists are just as human as everyone else. They get excited, they may even resort to ridicule. But good contributors, like those who have commented above, will only argue the facts, (be they right or wrong.) Extremely bright and humble people, like myself, find humor in the humanistic "faults" presented in discussions such as these. It doesn't mean that I don't get into disagreements with people here myself, but they and I can agree to disagree without copping to some generalised dismissal.

You obviously have something to say. Wouldn't you rather debate your points to the end of your proof, (perhaps with revisions,) with the brightest minds on the internet than, say, simply receive the accolades of "yes men?" (Pardon the sexism, ladies...)

I look forward to future posts,
Best thoughts,

Steve Davis
I think a distinction needs to be drawn between the act and the actor. An act can be evil while the actor is merely stupid. Anti-social acts are not always carried out by anti-social people.

Gerhard Adam
Well, for a start, why not take a look at Man’s history?
In the course of the 5,000 years of our known history, we find that
human beings have repeatedly and with the most natural ease reverted to
evil in their daily lives.

One of the first problems is that you're only looking at 5,000 years of a 2.4 million year history.  While you can certainly argue that this is recorded information, it also represents a period which is a major departure for how humans survived for literally millions of years.

If we consider the transition created by the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago, then you're still only looking at a relatively small piece of human existence.

From this you begin to justify your assessment of evil by looking at wars, etc.
For a start, we can look with horror at the number of wars, battles, skirmishes and other military activities that Man has engaged in.

However, I would argue that this isn't accurate.  There are many cases where war may be necessary, just as the need to fight individually may be necessary regardless of our personal desires to live in peace.  It is hardly reasonable to consider that everyone is evil simply because of such events.

Certainly the rise of the professional military changed the dynamics and abilities of the city-state, but humans, like most animals, have confrontations (even violent ones) in an effort to establish control and dominance.  This doesn't qualify as evil simply by its existence, any more than two elk confronting each other signifies some evil intent.

While this doesn't mean that man is arbitrarily good, I fail to see how this is necessarily evil.  Is it evil when an ant from one colony kills one from another colony, even if they are of the same species?  If not, then why should humans be considered evil when committing the same act?
We can read how Man has invaded other lands and other races and then
proceeded to slaughter innocent civilians, raping the women and
stealing from the wealth of the occupied lands.

Without knowing the motivation of each individual, how is this different from the effect of rabbits being introduced into Australia and decimating the native fauna?  Rabbits are devastating by causing major extinctions of native animals and destruction of plants.  Are they evil?

You may think that I'm making a frivolous comparison, but such evaluations need to be made based on the effects.  If such acts are evil, then it doesn't matter whether it is intentional or not, since we can't know what is inside someone's head, we can only evaluate the results.

Part of the problem in using words like "evil" is that it clearly suggests a "free will" where people could have chosen to behave differently.  But that raises the question of what would be different?  How should such a will be exercised?  As you may know, I don't believe there is "free will", so how does one command such a result?
