It's a fine point.  I have been working for a while on the impact Thatcher's chemistry degree had not only had on her policy but the way she approaches problems.  But like many things that take some philosophy and speculation, it is a long project.

Psychology might be a more direct route.
Anyone who can say "There is no society, there's only individuals and families" obviously has a profound personality deficit.

That's overdoing it a bit.  I think La Thatcher was responding to socialists who envisaged some dreadful abstraction called "society" into which people were to be made to fit by a Procrustean process.  British education is in a dire state because of this mentality.

Going back a couple of hundred years, weren't Jane Austen's novels about people's individuality running up against the demands of what then was regarded as "society"?

Too much conformity is certainly a bad thing, just as too much individuality upsets the balance needed between the two for group fitness.
