If you suffer from occasional or frequent heartburn, you know who you are. You may avoid eating certain foods, keep an arsenal of antacids beside your bed, and still suffer from pain caused by renegade stomach acid wrecking havoc on your esophagus.

For the 1 in 10 Americans who suffer from “heartburn” or occasional acid reflux, options and medications are plentiful, but for the 19 million Americans who suffer from severe acid reflux symptoms or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), medicine simply isn’t enough.

Acid reflux and GERD are caused by a few factors. Excess acid produced in the stomach, either by natural chemistry or certain food stimuli is leaked into the esophagus through the esophageal sphincter, a ring-like muscle designed to keep acid and food out of the esophagus and in the stomach. If the sphincter relaxes, then acid can escape and cause pain and inflammation in the esophagus. Over a long period of time, occasional or frequent acid reflux can cause chronic inflammation in the esophagus called erosive esophagitis.

Eventually, due to prolonged exposure to stomach acid, the esophagus cells can start producing stomach acid itself, effectively turning esophagus cells into stomach cells. Chronic stomach acid in the esophagus can also eventually cause esophageal cancer.

Someone who experiences frequent acid reflux, may have a faulty sphincter. This image shows the stomach acid in the lower part of the stomach, and when the lower esophageal sphincter is relaxed and open, it can allow stomach acid to leak out. This may be due to certain food stimuli, excess acid, or to relaxing sphincter muscles. Photo credit: UAB Health System

There are countless medicines to treat excess acid and acid reflux including antacids like Tums and Pepsid, which counteract the extra acid in the stomach with added base chemicals. There are also a whole class of medications which act as proton-pump inhibitors, which prevent the stomach from making more acid. Proton-pump inhibitors include medicines like Prevacid, and the newly FDA approved Kapidex, which are approved to treat excess acid and erosive esophagitis. Even though medications target the excess acid, a faulty esophageal sphincter can still allow leaks.

Looking at GERD treatment from a different angle, are researchers from Torax Medical Inc., a medical device design company. They have recently announced launch of a study to examine the safety and efficacy of their own minimally invasive LINX™ Reflux Management System, a small implant, on patients who suffer from GERD and are still experience symptoms despite anti-acid medications.

The LINX Reflux Management System is a band of magnetic beads placed outside the lower esophagus and helps to support the function of the esophageal sphincter. Proper function of this sphinter allows for normal digestion, and also prevents stomach acid from leaking into the esophagus. Photo credit: UCSD News

Torax’s new acid-reflux treatment is designed to target faulty sphincters that continue to allow acid to leak into the esophagus. Their study will implant the LINX Reflux Management System laparoscopically, through a small incision in the abdomen. The device is a band of magnetic beads which are placed around the lower esophagus. After placement, the magnetic attraction of the beads supports the esophageal sphincter to avoid acid leakage, but also is flexible enough to allow for normal digestion.
Robert Ganz, M.D. of Minnesota Gastroenterology and a Principal

Investigator in the trial said, "Many people who suffer from GERD do

not get complete relief of symptoms with drug therapy. The LINX System

is intriguing because it may provide both symptom relief and correction

of the physiologic defect."

Targeting faulty sphincters allows patients to be free of chronic acid reflux and without the side effects or long term consequences of anti-acid drug therapy and acid reflux.

I'm glad this only affects americans. I'd hate to suffer from this.

The American statistics are so you can see how prevalent this is. Of course the global estimation is much higher, but the information is not as accessible.  If you don't have anything to say about the real content of the article, then keep your sneering comments to yourself

Is there any way I can stay posted on the outcome of this trial?

Sure, you can check out the websites for the study and the product: at http://www.refluxstudy.com/ and

Hey...I am suicidal because of my chronic GERD...
I cry alot:( I am only 25 YEARS old...I am 50-51 kgs
IN good health

I developed 1) gastritis few months ago
which made me 2) puke/vomit about 30 times in 2 months
3)which resulted in a very weak low esophagus sphincter
4) which made me do an endoscopy
5) which revealed acids are reaching the throat/larynx/pharynx
6) which made the doctor conclude that i have a weak sphincter and ALOT of transient esophagus relaxations
7) which led me to do a general manometry, which came out ok-normal
8) and now I take 3 PPIS per day
9)I did the barium swallow esophagus transit test, and it showed barium liquid reflux back into my esophagus...
10) reaching throat/mouth and theyre inflamed

I am a good girl and i love helping others, i love to be kind and helpful
but now i am living hell and i can barely survive another day
i am literally on the verge of suicide

this device may help me?
I have gastritis and a very very weak esophagus sphincter
and MANY esophagus transient relaxations-

does this procedure help with transient relaxations decrease

my reflux is NOT a typical reflux - its like scarelodema reflux where ALOT of liquids reflux from a semi patulous tube
and dont clear until 10-15 minutes LITERALLY burns like...wow

pls help a sucicidal young girl
thankyou
juliana

Hi Juliana,

I would say try not to let things get you down. I know it's not exactly the best thing to have to live with but it can become manageable (to a point)..

Like yourself I also suffer from Acid Reflux due to a relaxed LES. The symptoms are usually worse at night because I'm laying flat so I sometimes wake up with a burning mouth and throbbing pain in my teeth where the acid has risen up and attacked my oral area. My teeth are actually becoming worn down at the back and there's a few teeth where I've noticed small dents have appeared near the gums. The dentists think I may also grind my teeth so all in all it looks like there is a risk - and not through poor hygiene or management - I will lose my teeth very early on in life. Great!

Also, like yourself, I am relatively healthy. 26 years old, non-smoker, 60kg, regular gym-goer. Furthermore, I never ate chocolate for about 10 years (since school) and I wasn't one for drinking fizzy drinks either. Yes, it's frustrating and annoying this has happened to us even though we take good care of ourselves, but then nobody asks to be inflicted with ill health.....it's probably just a genetic weakness or simply bad luck.

The best thing you can do is to try to accept to live with this. It's not easy, but there's really no other way for now. Also, it might be a good idea to undertake some trial and error with foods. At least if you feel you are attempting to help yourself and not wallowing you will make yourself feel better in the long run. I'm drawing all this my own perspective, by the way and what's worked for me.

The worst part for me is the teeth element, the pain really can become awful at times. Constant throbbing in the face and gums. The swallowing is difficult too, it hurts like mad in my back and chest with each gulp. At one point I was living on food that I whirled into a smoothie as I was afraid to swallow. Not eating what you want and not being able to eat a normal-sized meal is also a huge negative. I literally have to sprinkle my food with enzymes in order to make sure it doesn't sit in my stomach for hours afterwards.

Anyway, please keep your head up and stick with it. There's many others like you and I who are suffering, but I believe where there's life there's always hope. We must now hope that this trial proves to be successful and is the answer we've been looking for.

It's normal to go through stages where you feel like you can't go on any more, so sometimes it softens the blow knowing there are others out there who are in the same boat. Well, if you ever need anyone to talk to just let me know. If not, I wish you the very best of luck in the future and hope you feel better really soon.

Anthony

I would consider this treatment, but I would be to scared a magnet would strangle me to death! Don't cat scans do that or something?
