Craig Venter and James Watson have won this year's Cold Spring Harbor 'Double Helix Medal For Scientific Research'. Venter deserves it, but what's the deal with Watson? He hasn't done much for science research recently except tarnish its image by insulting black people and calling everyone else boring.

Hasn't the guy won enough medals for a career that stalled scientifically decades ago? What's even stranger is that this award is completely incestuous, coming from the lab that Watson directed for years. It's like the Catholic Church giving the Pope an award for community service.

How many medals did Sir Lawrence Bragg win for being director of the Cavendish Laboratory? Did the Cavendish cook up some reason to give Bragg one?

Hello,

tisk tisk.. you linked your blog to Watson's book, so people can now buy it. Watson was honored for his part in the Genome experiment. He has been a champion for this project and in him Venter had a champion. Venter will one day win the nobel prize and in his speech he will thank Watson again (even if they still don't like each other, or so I've heard) Also it is Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories.

Peace be onto you!!

Watson was honored for his part in the Genome experiment.

Was it more than cheerleading and a cheek swab? I'll concede that Watson had a significant role in making the Human Genome Project become a reality. But I guess I still see this as something akin to an award to Al Gore for inventing the internet.
